DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tenet Healthcare (NYSE:THC) will hold its 2017 Healthy Over Hungry®
Cereal Drive from June 2-9 to fight hunger and promote the importance of
eating a healthy breakfast. The annual campaign supports Feeding America®
and its nationwide network of local food banks and distribution
partners. As a part of this initiative, Tenet has announced a challenge
grant of up to $100,000 to promote financial donations to the drive,
marking the second consecutive year of the grant.
This Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive is designed to provide a healthy,
well-balanced breakfast for children and families struggling with food
insecurity during the summer months. The 2016 week-long campaign
collected more than 2.2 million servings of cereal and raised over
$240,000.
“We know that good health starts with good nutrition,” said Dian Adams,
chief nursing officer at Tenet Healthcare and co-chairman of the drive.
“Tenet’s Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive aims to help those struggling
with hunger in the summer, a time when many children no longer have
access to the school meals they rely on. Also, we know that children who
stay active and eat healthy have fewer chronic health problems,
increased concentration and more energy.”
During the week-long drive, local participating Tenet hospitals and
other facilities, along with the company’s Conifer Health Solutions and
United Surgical Partners International (USPI) subsidiaries, will
encourage employees, neighbors and community partners to donate money,
boxes of healthy cereal and other healthy food items to benefit those
struggling with hunger in their local community.
More than 190 Tenet, Conifer Health and USPI facilities will conduct
food drives and fundraising efforts as part of the campaign, benefitting
more than 85 local not-for-profit organizations. Financial donations
made to these campaigns between June 2-9 will be matched by Tenet, up to
$100,000 collectively.
“At Tenet, our mission is to help people live happier, healthier lives.
By issuing another $100,000 challenge grant this year, Tenet is working
to do just that. Last year’s campaign was a great success and we hope to
raise even more funds, enabling our beneficiary food banks to purchase
perishable items such as milk, fruit, and lean protein that are crucial
for a complete, healthy breakfast,” said Dan Waldmann, senior vice
president of Public Affairs at Tenet Healthcare.
"More than 42 million people in the United States face hunger, including
13 million children," said Nancy Curby, senior vice president of
Corporate Partnerships & Operations at Feeding America®. "Hunger is an
issue that impacts every single county in our country and we are
grateful for Tenet’s support of our food bank network through its
Healthy Over Hungry® Cereal Drive.”
The Cereal Drive was launched in Detroit in 2010 by Pam Taurence, a
nurse at Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Ms.
Taurence and her colleagues realized that many children were coming to
the hospital hungry during the summer months when they were not
attending school. Tenet Healthcare expanded the drive nationally in 2014
after Detroit Medical Center became part of the Tenet system. In
recognition of her efforts, Ms. Taurence was inducted into the Tenet
Heroes Hall of Fame in April of 2014.
