Tenet and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso Announce Plans to Establish a New Teaching Hospital

May 6, 2014

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE:THC) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso (TTUHSC) will develop a new teaching hospital and an 110,000 square foot medical office building in west El Paso. The new hospital will have capacity up to 140 beds and will operate as a part of the Sierra Providence Health Network (SPHN), Tenet’s system of hospitals and outpatient centers in El Paso. It will serve as a teaching hospital for medical students, nursing students, resident physicians and faculty from TTUHSC’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, eventually offering training for approximately 75 medical residents across a multi-year program.

“We are proud to expand our El Paso network to include educating the next generation of healthcare professionals, many of whom we hope will choose to remain in the region after their training,” said Trevor Fetter, president and chief executive officer of Tenet Healthcare. “With today’s announcement, Tenet’s recently completed and planned investments in the community will exceed $550 million over a 10 year period, and we are pleased to continue our commitment to the health and wellbeing of this important region.”

The facilities, technology and medical research capability at the new hospital will advance educational training in specialties such as emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology and surgery, and provide new clinical research opportunities.

“The Sierra Providence Health Network and the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine share a focus on clinical excellence, and we are proud to work together to offer our students an exceptional experience providing unrivaled care in a state-of-the-art community hospital,” said Jose Manuel de la Rosa, M.D., founding dean of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and vice president for health affairs for TTUHSC at El Paso. “This new hospital will allow our students to benefit from the unique characteristics of a private practice in a patient-focused setting.”

SPHN and TTUHSC also recently announced the development of the city’s first geriatric behavioral health unit that will be located on SPHN’s Providence Memorial Hospital campus. The $2.1 million unit will have 12 private rooms and will serve the needs of patients 65 years-of-age and older.

“The Sierra Providence Health Network is committed to providing world-class healthcare to the citizens of El Paso, and we look forward to working with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso to achieve this,” said Eric Evans, market CEO for Sierra Medical Center and Providence Memorial Hospital. “This collaboration will bring together best practices and clinical leaders from both institutions to improve patient care, and together, we will offer an exceptional level of services to the west side communities as well as Southern New Mexico.”

This announcement is the latest in a series of collaborations and significant investments by Tenet to enhance the healthcare services offered to the City of El Paso and the surrounding communities. Earlier this year, SPHN announced a partnership with the University of Texas at El Paso to advance research projects related to general health, disease prevention and advanced medical care. Last year, Sierra Medical Center and Providence Memorial Hospital announced a $120 million investment in upgraded technology, expanded service lines and aesthetic remodeling, in addition to a $67 million expansion at Sierra Providence East Medical Center that was announced in 2012. Today, SPHN is the second-largest private employer in the City of El Paso, with the new hospital projected to initially add more than 300 new jobs.

Construction on the new teaching hospital is scheduled to begin in 2014 and be completed in the fall of 2016.
